A community cafe providing work for people with learning disabilities could reopen at a former garage building this autumn.

It is understood staff and volunteers behind Ilkley’s Oasis Cafe could open a bigger community cafe at the former Glover’s Garage premises on Little Lane, although talks are still under way in a bid to secure the new base.

There was dismay throughout the community last November when it emerged the cafe, originally set up in partnership between Ilkley churches’ charity CTI 2000 and Bradford College, would have to move from premises owned by All Saints Parish Church to make way for a full-time prayer group.

Now it has emerged discussions are taking place between the organisers of the Oasis Cafe project and Horton Housing Association, which is believed to have leased the premises.

But it is understood agreements still need to be signed over the possible move and planning permission will be needed, as well as funds for converting the building.

Member of the CTI 2000 project, Hamish Currie, confirmed discussions were in progress about new premises.

“We’re obviously excited about it,” he said.

The cafe is running at its original base each Thursday and Friday during term time until this summer.

A £100,000 appeal was recently launched to fund a new base for the Oasis Cafe, with the intention of extending its operations to several weekdays.
