Three cricket clubs and the ongoing refurbishment of a historic public hall have been awarded £11,000 by ward councillors.

Bradford councillors Mike Gibbons, Anne Hawkesworth and Martin Smith (all Con, Ilkley) have allocated most of the remaining money from the Ilkley ward’s area action plan funding pot.

The three councillors have already committed thousands of pounds from the £17,500 fund this financial year to Ilkley AFC and for a no-cold calling zone in the Valley Road area.

In their latest round of funding allocations, they have awarded £3,000 each to Ilkley Cricket Club, Ben Rhydding Cricket Club and Olicanians Cricket Club, as well as £2,000 to the Friends of the King’s Hall and Winter Garden.

The funding for the ward is a share of £130,000 of Area Committee Action Plan Support Funding, divided among the Keighley Constituency wards.

The cricket club money will go towards a pitch cover for Ben Rhydding, a new scorers’ box for Olicanians, on Denton Road, and new seating for the Ilkley club, also on Denton Road.

Councillor Hawkesworth said: “We have been very pleased to allocate this money to the listed projects. It is appropriate that in the Olympics year there is a bias towards young sport.”

The councillors have also given £2,000 towards replacing old lighting in the Winter Garden, on Station Road.

Bradford Council is currently working on the refurbishment and redecoration of the entrance foyer and the connecting corridor to the Winter Garden in a scheme expected to cost around £10,000.

Friends of the King’s Hall and Winter Garden chairman Jim Horsley said: “We’re delighted. It’s to replace some of the track lighting in the Winter Garden. It’ll be very useful, particularly for weddings, conferences and exhibitions.”

Around £800 remains in the fund for Ilkley.
