Kelda Water services will no doubt be bracing itself for reaction to its latest plan to replace obsolete turbines at Chelker Reservoir.

By the end of this week the firm is expected to have submitted its third planning application.

This time it is for two 75-metre high structures on the high ground between Addingham and Draughton.

Kelda says it has listened to the views of local communities before drawing up its latest plans, saying it has taken into account their feedback. The new plan it believes goes a long way to addressing concerns.

They have reduced the height and moved one of the turbines away from the road access and nearby properties.

It is impossible to guess what the reaction will be when people living nearby and other interested parties get letters from Kelda.

The pages of this newspaper have carried views for and against turbines in a bid to help people make a decision.

What is for certain is that, like them or like them not, they will provide renewable clean energy to do the job at the pumping stations.

It is a fact of life now that no matter where you go in the UK, wind turbines are springing up on a wide variety of sites — many in places of natural beauty, such as at Chelker.

It is right that there should be full consultation with all stakeholders in such issues and the views of all concerned are now well known.

It is a major issue but surely, now is the time for a final decision to be made.
