The benevolent bank holiday weather brought thousands into Ilkley on Monday for the annual carnival.

Crowds lined the streets in the sunshine to watch the parade of colourful costumes march to East Holmes Field for a day of celebration, music, entertainment and fun.

From Beatrix Potter classics to modern-day favourites, youngsters brought this year’s theme of children’s literature to life.

Jemima Puddleduck waddled down The Grove while schoolchildren courageously carried a life-size Aslan flanked by fauns from The Chronicles Of Narnia.

Meanwhile, toddlers came down to earth as Aliens In Underpants and Willy Wonka led a collection of giant chocolates and sweets.

A sea of hats and broomsticks from Winnie The Witch and Harry Potter added their own touch of magic.

They were all accompanied by the rousing sound of bagpipes and brass on their way to the carnival field, where the winners were presented with prizes. Sacred Heart Primary School received the most accolades, winning the best walking tableau for The Chronicles Of Narnia. It was also the first to be awarded a trophy in memory of the late carnival organiser Matthew King, who died last year.

Ben Rhydding Scouts and Guides won first place for the best decorated float – Hogwarts School from Harry Potter.

All Saints Primary School and Ilkley Pre-school were also singled out for their originality.

Carnival-goers stayed to enjoy live music and activities, from an inflatable army assault course to traditional funfair.

Organisers had feared the 24th carnival could be the last due to rising costs and lack of support.

But compere and star of reality TV show No Going Back, Richard Turnbull, urged people to ditch the doom and gloom and help out to ensure the festival continues.

“If you can come along and get involved, you can help the carnival become bigger and better,” he said.
