Readers are coming up with their own novel ways of giving away books in celebration of World Book Night.
Sixteen customers of The Grove Bookshop in Ilkley will be out and about giving away books from Saturday in an initiative run by publishers to spread the word about enjoying a good read.
The joint initiative between publishers and bookshops all over the country will see a million books handed out.
The chosen customers are invited to distribute their books in inventive ways, from donating to schools and hospitals, to handing out copies on buses and trains, or even crossing the country and leaving books for people to pick up. Titles being given away include First World War classic All Quiet On The Western Front, Alan Bennett’s A Life Like Other People’s, Yann Martel’s Life Of Pi, and poetry by Carol Ann Duffy.
The Grove believes the scheme will encourage the love of reading, despite national media concerns that the scheme will be detrimental to the business of bookshops.
