Otley students have been finding out more about everything from political extremism to forming a band.

Pupils also enjoyed road safety workshops, discussions on job skills and a police talk about weapons and crime as part of Prince Henry’s Grammar School’s Enhanced Curriculum Day – Citizenship.

Year 12 and 13 students had the chance to question ex-BNP member Andy Sykes about his experiences with the far-right group in his hometown of Bradford and watched a BBC documentary, made with Mr Sykes, to expose BNP members’ views and activities.

He then joined the students for a debate on extremism in politics.

Year 7 and 9 pupils, meanwhile, discussed economic wellbeing and road safety, while in Year 8, the focus was on enterprise – with students completing marketing and money-making tasks based around forming a band.

Safer Schools Officer PC Heidi Beardsmore arranged a police talk with Year 10 pupils, who were also shown a film about the effects of alcohol and how criminal actions affect others.
