We are delighted that talks between the town and city council on the future of the Civic Centre at Otley are amicable. Coun Campbell is however somewhat disingenuous in implying that Otley residents would be expected to pay for all the works. This has never been the expectation.

Once again, this is a complex project, and to succeed it will need to harness funding from various sources. There are many community organisations and individuals in the town with an active interest in the future of the building, and lots of creative and practical ideas about ways in which the building could become a vibrant and successful centre. We hope the amicable talks will lead to a full exploration of all the social, cultural, heritage and tourism activities that might find a home in the building, and attract funding to it. May we also suggest the town and city council consult the people of Otley on the building’s future and keep them better informed than they have in the past.
