The ancient art of shepherding will be celebrated at the 2011 Otley Show.

Keen to encourage more young exhibitors, Wharfedale Agricultural Society is introducing a new sheep section class to find the Best Young Shepherd or Shepherdess.

The winner of the event, which is open to anyone aged 16 and under, will receive a £100 prize, which has been jointly donated by a local farmer and Petwise of Otley.

Show secretary Janet Raw is also hoping for a repeat of last year’s glorious weather – and record crowds – come Saturday, May 21.

She said: “We’re hoping that the show will be once again blessed with a warm, dry day.

“It is hoped the new class for best young shepherd or shepherdess will introduce youngsters to exhibiting, not only at Otley Show but at the many other shows throughout the county this coming summer.

“Otley Show remains one of the highlights in the town’s calendar and supports the region’s farming and agricultural communities, as well as providing a major boost to the local economy.

“Attractions already lined up for the 202nd show to be held on May 21 will include The Sheep Show – a live stage show about sheep breeds and wool, including a dancing sheep – the Yorkshire Military Marching Band, the Mountgrace Gun Dog Display, and Ben Potter and his birds of prey.

“And it will again feature the traditional livestock and animal classes – cattle, sheep, horses, goats, poultry, rabbits and dogs – supported by classes showcasing the best of local produce, handicrafts and floral art.”

The first major agricultural show of the season, Otley Show was first held in 1796 and is believed to be the oldest one-day show in the country.

More details about the young shepherd and shepherdess class, and the 202nd show as a whole, will be announced soon.
