Three new members of Menston Scouts were given a spooky welcome when they were invested into the movement in the crypts of York Minster during an action-packed weekend in York.

The trip also saw the Scouts, aged between ten and 12, enjoying a trip to the York Dungeons, a Ghost Walk, a treasure hunt in the Minster and a walk along the city’s historic walls.

They also found out about the art of fudge-making at close hand, and rounded off the first day’s fun with some pizza and a scary film. On the Sunday they visited the National Railway Museum and flew in a Space Shuttle simulator.

Kate Hargreaves, ten, the first girl Cub in Menston who has now, along with Hattie Barnes, ten, become one of the first two girl Scouts, said: “I’m thrilled to be a Scout. Scouts had in the past been labelled for boys only, but Hattie and I love that we can do adventurous things with friends.”

Hattie said: “We all liked watching the fudge being made!”

Scout leader Charlie Barnes said: “Lots of people have been so kind in helping us have a great time. From York Minster, for laying-on our own guide and a treasure hunt, and the ‘Lord Mayor’s Own’ Scout Group in York for letting us stay in their hut, to the staff at the fudge shop who found 20 Scouts in their kitchen as they were making their latest batch.”

The troop’s next adventure will be a trip to The Gadget Show Live. A cycle trip to Skipton and a camp at Windermere have also been lined up.
