A Commons vote to triple tuition fees will split MPs today – with one Conservative MP planning to break rank and vote against a rise.

Labour's Bradford West MP Marsha Singh and Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe will vote against the policy in line with their party.

They will be joined in the 'no lobby' by Shipley MP Philip Davies who has told Conservative whips he intends to vote against the Government's policy.

Lib Dem Bradford East MP David Ward and Keighley Tory MP Kris Hopkins will vote in favour of the rise.

The vote will be a massive test for Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg who is in the embarrassing position of having most senior colleagues agreeing to vote for the policy, ten backbenchers vowing to vote against and many more likely to abstain.

Mr Davies said: "It is almost certain I will vote against the Government. I do not believe in tuition fees, my view is fewer people should go to university and pay no fees.”

Ministers have tried to shore up support for the university funding package by unveiling £150 million of help, which could see fees waived for one or two years for 18,000 of the poorest students.
