The Dunwell Brothers Band kicked off their Caffe Nero Band of the Month tour on home soil in Leeds last Friday, as they look set to take the music scene by storm with their new self titled EP – virtually a mini album with seven class tracks.

The band, pictured, has been rapidly growing in popularity over the year or so with this line line up. They have established themselves in London and have played some big festival gigs including the Hop Farm in Kent alongside Bob Dylan.

More recently they played in front of 10,000 people at the Triumph Live event with Mumford and Sons and The Stranglers. Now the Caffe Nero tour gives them a chance to gain their own recognition nationwide, with two gigs a day for 20 days.

They started out in the intimate Albion Place, Leeds, upstairs venue with an acoustic set and then the same evening moved on to the bigger Park Row venue.

Each of the Caffe Nero gigs will be a challenge to their adaptability but this will not shake this bunch of incredibly talented musicians, even if they may be hampered by the fact Lee Dawson’s double bass came to a sad end after being dropped on the pavement in York on Saturday!

The opening gig on the tour provided a new challenge as they had to rise above the noise of the coffee machines and crying babies, as their audience included the young mums’ brigade out for a morning coffee.

The evening gig in Park Row was sheer quality. Yeadon drummer Jonny Lamb for once is not hidden away on this tour, with no drum kit Jonny takes centre stage at the front seated on his cajun drum box and it gives the audience an opportunity to appreciate the part Jonny’s vocals play in the band’s music.

The band’s music has been described as alternative, acoustic, country, rock and a combination of the four.

The band is fronted by Pudsey brothers David and Joseph Dunwell, who both attended St Mary’s RC School at Menston before becoming professional solo performers on the Yorkshire circuit.

In October 2009 they decided to form a band and subsequently recruited Halifax musician Lee Dawson (double bass), former Intake School of Performing Arts pupil Jonny Lamb and fellow Pudsey musician David Hanson (guitar). All five members are strong vocalists allowing the group to perform stunning harmonies live.

In December 2009 the band celebrated the completion of their debut single, Elizabeth, with an intimate show at Seven Artspace in Chapel Allerton and just a few weeks ago launched their EP at a packed Wardrobe in Leeds.

The Dunwell Brothers Band never cease to entertain and on a regular basis thrill their fans with new material. Their self-penned songs are stunning and it won’t be long before this band gets the recognition it deserves. The seven-track mini album is available online at zavvi.com or at Jumbo and Crash Records in Leeds.

It is also available at the band’s Caffe Nero gigs so catch them if you can and you won’t be disappointed.

The Caffe Nero tour started in Leeds and moved on to York, Durham, Newcastle and Edinburgh before arriving in Glasgow today, where they are assured of a warm welcome from the Dunwell’s host of Scottish relatives.

The band then moves on to Belfast. Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol and Oxford before the tour ends with three days in London, playing at six venues in the capital. As a sign of the band’s growing status to set them up for the tour guitarists David, Joseph and Dave were given backing from Gibson guitars, who provided them with new instruments.
