The eighth Ilkley Summer Festival draws to a close this weekend with some Pomp and Circumstance and open-air entertainment on the Grove.

The Ilkley Parish Council-run Last Night of the Proms concert will again be the grand finale to the month-long festival, and is again set to bring talented musicians and singers, as well as crowds of music lovers, out on Saturday night.

Some tickets are still available for seats at tables in prime positions at Saturday’s concert, which will again see main shopping street the Grove become a pedestrian-only zone for the night.

Up-and-coming young singers and an award-winning classical guitarist are among the performers heading for Ilkley this weekend.

Soprano Alexandra Lowe, who performed at this year’s Denis Sharp Bursary Concert, and Grassington Festival Fringe, will be performing. Another young singer, Christian Lunn, will sing solo pieces, including songs from Les Miserables, as well as singing duets with friend Alex Knowlson.

Acclaimed Greek classical guitarist Vassilis Bessas will play pieces from his popular classical guitar repertoire at the concert. A new act for the concert will be the Elderly Brothers, performing a tribute to the Everley Brothers.

A lively end to the night is also expected from the Marsden Silver Prize Band. As well as some of the much-loved Last Night of the Proms classics, some exciting additions are said to be expected from the band.

Organiser Coun Mike Gibbons, has his fingers crossed for similar weather to the warm evening that greeted last Saturday’s Dolce Vita Cabaret Night, pictured.

But after this week’s unpredictable weather – and last year’s debut of rain on the last night – he is reminding concert-goers to come equipped with waterproofs and umbrellas.

Tickets for the concert can still be bought at Ilkley Visitor Information Centre, Ilkley Town Hall, Station Road, or by calling 01943 602319.

This year’s Ilkley Summer Festival has spanned five weekends, beginning just ahead of Yorkshire Day, with some Victorian-themed Courtyard Capers at the Manor House Museum, and a tea dance at the Clarke Foley Centre, on July 31.

Another tea dance, taking place this afternoon is among the closing events of the festival.

The sequence and ballroom dance will take place in the Kings Hall today from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, as part of the festival. And much-loved Ilkley singer Shirley Britton will be singing songs from down memory lane. Refreshments will be supplied by Bettys.

Admission is £4 at the door. For further information, contact Michael on 01943 608871 or call Ilkley Visitor Information Centre.

Afternoon teas will again be on offer in the Winter Garden, Station Road, from 11am to 3pm on Sunday. No advance booking is required.
