Yorkshire pride will be celebrated for a whole weekend this year, with two days of special events in Ilkley.

Not content with the traditional festivities of Yorkshire Day itself on Sunday, local organisations are putting on more entertainment and music, beginning on Saturday, to give Ilkley Summer Festival a slightly earlier start than usual.

The return of Courtyard Capers to Manor House Museum, Castle Yard, on Saturday afternoon will this year give the historic surroundings a Victorian feel.

The Friends of the Manor House and Ilkley Playhouse are getting together to present music, drama and fun period activities for families between 2pm and 4pm.

Haworth Brass Band will play in the courtyard, and a short play will be staged by Ilkley Playhouse. Youngsters and the young-at-heart can have some fun with Victorian street games, including the making of optical illusion toys, and refreshments will be on offer.

A nostalgic tea dance takes place at the Clarke Foley Centre from 1pm, with live music from New Horizons Dance Band. Admission costs £6 and includes a strawberry tea.

Yorkshire Day itself, on Sunday, promises to be bigger than ever.

The official Yorkshire Day Declaration will be made by the town crier, outside the town hall, at 11.35am, usually followed by a hearty singing of On Ilkla Moor Baht ’At.

Mary Jane herself, the object of adoration in the Ilkley song, is expected to be on hand, although probably keeping her hat on as events move to the nearby Winter Garden.

Clifton and Lightcliffe Band will perform a brass band concert, there will be free tea and cake and Ilkley Brewery will be offering free tasters of its Mary Jane beer.

Bradford Council will be looking for the finest examples of Yorkshire delicacies chutney and parkin in a competition being held at the Winter Garden. Prizes are on offer for the creator of the best jar of homemade Yorkshire chutney, and best homemade Yorkshire parkin.

Entries need to be delivered to the tourist information centre by 4pm on Saturday July 31.

Ilkley community choir Moor Notes plans to bring some festivity to the streets throughout the day, inviting groups of singers to perform, ending with a grand finale at the bandstand on the Grove later in the day.
