Former pupils of the Oaklands School for Girls made their return to Ilkley to meet up with their ex-classmates in a reunion at the Craiglands Hotel.

The school itself closed in the 1960s, but there have been several reunions in recent years, organised by former pupil Mary Webster, who today lives in Cumbria.

Oaklands was known for its strict regime, and insistence that pupils wore the distinctive brown uniform with a gold stripe – right down to the brown gym knickers, which staff checked for at every PE lesson The girls were also expected to keep their hats on the way home from school.

Many of the former pupils continue to live locally. Mrs Webster, known as Mary Grainge during her school days, set about tracking down former Oaklands girls several years ago, enlisting the help of the Friends Reunited website, and even finding former classmates in the United States.
