The husband of fundraiser Kim Robson, who died of breast cancer last year, is urging people to support a rounders tournament being held in her memory.

Simon Robson is hoping people will watch the matches at Ghyll Royd School in Burley-in-Wharfedale on Saturday and join in a day of family fun.

Kim, a former member of Ilkley Rounders Team, was diagnosed with cancer within months of her first charity run in 2006. Inspired by the example of Jane Tomlinson, the mum-of-two went on to raise thousands of pounds for cancer charities.

Saturday’s event will be opened by Jane’s husband, Mike.

Funds from the tournament will go to Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice, which cared for Kim during the final weeks of her life.

Simon, who has given up his job to look after their children Jack, 13, and nine-year-old Ava, said: “I think it would be really nice for people to come and spend a few hours, take part and make a contribution. There are lots of things going on and it is an opportunity to say this hospice is ours. We need to do everything we can to support it.

“It is a real haven in terms of the level of care, the nurses and volunteers who give up their time to help people. It was tremendous in helping and caring for Kim, and it also took a lot of the stress out of the situation at that particular time.”

The idea for a rounders tournament and family fun day came from Kim’s sporting friends in the Ilkley Ladies Rounders Team. “Rounders was a big thing for Kim. She was really into her sport and it was something she was really passionate about,” said team member Liz Williams.

“We felt doing a rounders tournament and a family fun day would be a really appropriate way of raising some money for the hospice in her memory.”

The tournament starts at 2pm and the event includes stalls, a raffle and bouncy castle as well as evening of entertainment and barbecue. For more information call 07702 651540 or 07714 615936.
