A pensioner who fell to her death from a window at her home in Ilkley had been depressed for 40 years, a inquest heard.

Christina Craven, 74, of Premiere Park, died in August last year from multiple injuries after falling about 13 feet from the lounge window.

The inquest in Bradford on Tuesday was told by several members of her family that despite suffering from depression she had given no indication of wanting to end her life.

A statement by her daughter, Jane Dulay, which was read out in court, said she had been anxious and asked to go into hospital on the morning she died.

Mrs Craven’s son-in-law, Amrick Singh, who saw her fall, said he was unable to tell if the action was deliberate.

Recording an open verdict, Coroner Roger Whittaker, said: “I am not satisfied on the evidence that I have reviewed that the question of her intention is beyond reasonable doubt and therefore I can’t recall that she took her own life. Equally, I am not sure on the balance of probabilities that this is an accident and I am left having to record an open verdict.”
