Ilkley Upstagers are never afraid to push back the frontiers and their production of Return To The Forbidden Planet took them on a new journey.

These talented youngsters tackle everything head on and this was another vibrant show with excellent staging and groupings by director Gill Jackson and choreographer Paul Nowland.

Staged in the round with action also taking place in the auditorium and balcony boxes, there was plenty to catch the eye and take you off on another tangent.

The first half was fairly slow but the action warmed up after the interval when Jake Mitchell as Cookie and Vicki Holmes as the science officer demonstrated their talents to the full with excellent singing voices.

Ariel, the bewheeled robot, was played magnificently by Craig Dinnewell whose skating prowess was really tested as he navigated the stage and auditorium with aplomb. Tv’s John Thirlwell made a cameo appearance on a backdrop screen as the narrator.

The well rehearsed and polished cast also included Jack Hanson, Declan Field, Laura Benazaize, Richard Spears, Ailish Mullan-Wilkinson, Daniel Bendjelloul, Heather Lamb, Matthew McGuire, Alice Pike, Pete Dakin, Chessie Fox, Dalton Wood and Emma Williams.

The backing provided by the Moon Rockers Band, under the direction of musical director Phil Walsh, wove many familiar tunes into this groundbreaking production.
