Two days of theatre workshops with leading Yorkshire theatre director Nobby Dimon will culminate in lively street theatre performances.

The workshops and performances – for adults as well as children – are being run by Rombalds Revels.

The workshops for adults – anyone over the age of 16 – will be held at the Church House, Church Street, Ilkley, on Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22, followed by a performance in the Manor House Court-yard on the Saturday.

Nobby Dimon of North Country Theatre will lead the workshops which will focus on street entertainment which still has its roots in the Middle Ages and has evolved to the present day.

A Plank & A Passion is described as a mercurial mixture of medieval murder mystery and modern theatre methods. In two days, Nobby, whose North Country Theatre were the originators of the West End and Broadway hit version of The 39 Steps, will lead the workshop in devising, rehearsing and performing a 20-minute piece of street theatre. Andrew Leggott and Pat Dyson, of Ilkley Playhouse, are also involved.

The Rombalds Revels will showcase some of the best street entertainers around as well as lively theatre performances starring the workshop participants.

Entertainers will include jugglers, stilt walkers, fire eaters, puppet shows, magic and music. As well as the chance to see professional street circus performers, festival-goers will be invited to have a go.

Registration for the adult and children’s workshops is now open. For information about the over 16s theatre workshops, telephone 01943 609393.

The fee is £20 (£15 concessions). To book, send your name, address, telephone number and email address if you have one to David Barlett, 53 Grove Road, Ilkley LS29 9PQ, with your cheque made payable to Friends of the Manor House.

The junior theatre workshops will take place at Ilkley Playhouse, in Weston Road.

The workshops will create a piece of theatre telling the story of Noah’s Flood in the style of the medieval mystery plays.

Children who want to be part of the Saturday performance are invited to attend morning and afternoon workshops on Thursday, August 20, as well as a short Saturday morning workshop.

Andrew Leggott and Pat Dyson, who will lead the workshops, said: “There are lots of parts, you don’t have to learn lines.”

Booking is essential. Forms are available from the library, Ilkley Manor House or from Andrew Leggott, telephone 01943 602014. The children’s workshop fee is £10.

Anyone who would like to be part of the procession can go along to a free drop-in workshop at the Manor House on the Thursday, 2-4pm, to make a hat, helmet or banner. Under 8s must be accompanied by an adult.
