Family activities, historical entertainment and guided walks exploring heritage and architecture in Ilkley will provide a wide-variety of entertainment in August.

Local organisations are doing their bit to make sure the summer festival is about more than simply the big events. Both young and old can learn more about the area they live in at a series of special activities being organised during the festival.

The popular series of heritage guided walks, organised by Ilkley Civic Society and Bradford Museums, again forms a big part of the Ilkley Summer Festival programme.

Most of the walks last between an hour and an hour-and-a-half. Old Ilkley will be the theme of the first walk, starting at 2pm on Wednesday August 5. Alex Cockshott, of Ilkley Civic Society, will lead the walkers from the Manor House Museum at 2pm.

Regular walks will also go in search of Roman Ilkley, Ilkley of 1859 during Darwin’s Visit, Prehistoric Rombalds Moor, Villas of West Ilkley and Ilkley Cemetery.

The Manor House Museum will be the base for family workshops taking a closer look at natural history.

Places at the Dipping Into Darwin workshops, on Tuesday mornings and afternoons, must be booked.

The first activity, on August 4, will be pond dipping.

The Friends of the Manor House are organising Romb-alds Revels, a series of workshops, performance and a children’s costume making session based on medieval theatre.
