A poster from one of the giants of the railway age is once again being used to promote one of West Yorkshire’s most popular tourist attractions.

An image of Ilkley’s famous outdoor swimming pool created by Frank Sherwin – whose graceful advertising posters attracted thousands on to the railways in the golden age of steam – will be stamped on hundreds of t-shirts and posters to raise money for the Friends of Ilkley Lido.

The group is hoping to safeguard the future of the Ilkley Lido and improve facilities there for the thousands of people who enjoy outdoor swimming as part of their summer recreation.

The group has already set up a website and is investigating the possibility of having the uniquely shaped outdoor pool awarded listed building status by English Heritage to further protect its future and attract some government funding.

A spokesman for the group said: “A range of fundraising activities are planned in the run-up to next summer, and we are also looking at ways of expanding opening hours and setting up special events to take advantage of the pool’s unique attraction.”

Permission to use the Frank Sherwin artwork has been given by the Science museum’s Science and Society Picture Library.

Frank Sherwin was born in Derby in 1896 and his vibrant artwork for the London and North Eastern Railway and other companies provided some of the most memorable images of post-war advertising.

The t-shirts are available from the Friends of Ilkley Lido website priced £20, along with other items of merchandise.

The Lido was opened in 1935 and is one of just 127 open-air pools left in the country. It is owned and managed by Bradford Council.

It is one of the county’s most popular tourist attractions – pulling in up to 4,000 people on a hot summer’s day.
