LEEDS Bradford Airport has launched an investigation after a couple accidentally got through security with a steak knife.
Michael and Kathryn Roper, who have run the Dog & Gun in Oxenhope for more than three decades, faced an unthinkable situation when winding down in Leeds Bradford Airport just before jetting off to their holiday home in Spain.
Kathryn had unknowingly brought a sharp steak knife through security in her bag, after she had used it to cut some cake when visiting her step-dad earlier that day.
Michael and Kathryn Roper (Image: UGC) Michael said: “My wife had been down to see her elderly step-dad, she took a knife and some cake for him.
“She put the knife in her bag, picked up our passports, bags, etc. and off we went.
“We went through security, sat having a beer and she pulled it out and she was like ‘oh my God’.”
The couple went through the new scanners at the airport where you no longer have to take liquids out of your bags, according to Michael.
LBA, which is in Yeadon, confirmed an internal investigation into the matter is underway.
A spokesperson for the airport said: “As the incident is under investigation internally, we can’t comment any further.”

Michael said: “We were stuck with an offensive weapon, a sharp steak knife, airside.
“You can’t put it into a bin.
“You’ve got a responsibility, it could get into the wrong hands, we all know what can happen.”
He added: “You can’t just give it to a member of the public there.”
Michael decided the best course of action was to put the knife in his pocket, walk back through security and notify the chief there.
He said: “He scanned my boarding card and said ‘thanks, we’ll look into it’.”

Michael said: “It’s pretty rubbish, either the scanners were not working properly, or the bloke looking at the bag station has not been paying attention.”
He added: “It just brings back memories of the 9/11 job.
“That’s why we couldn’t put it in the bin or given to anybody, we had to go to the security man.
“The onus was on us really.”
