Search the Public Notice PortalA PUBLIC inquiry into night time flying rules at Leeds Bradford Airport will be held this week.
A planning inspector will consider Leeds Bradford Airport’s appeals against Leeds City Council’s refusal of two CLEUD (Certificate of Lawfulness of Existing Use or Development) applications and the non-determination of a third, which would have allowed older and noisier aircraft to operate at night.
Vincent Hodder, CEO, Leeds Bradford Airport said: “This Public Inquiry is not about increasing or changing night flights at Leeds Bradford Airport. We are simply attempting to clarify what our current permission, written nearly 30 years ago, means today.
“The purpose of the existing planning consent when granted was to allow night flights but minimise the potential for increased noise of those flights on local communities. Our interpretation of the conditions stays true to this purpose and would encourage airlines to deploy the latest generation of aircraft which are quieter and more efficient.
“The inquiry process will allow an informed decision to be made by an independent third party on the correct legal interpretation of the existing planning so we can continue to deliver an airport Yorkshire can be proud of.
“We want to sustainably develop our airport, make it fit for the future and meet the demand for international connectivity that exists in our region. We want to play our part in driving economic growth in Yorkshire.
“We are investing over £200m into improving our passenger experience, creating up to 5,500 new jobs in the region and adding nearly £1bn to the growth of the UK economy in the process. We remain committed to delivering this growth in a sustainable manner and remain on course to achieve our Net Zero target by 2030.
“Needless to say, regardless of the outcome, we’ll continue to work with Leeds City Council and our Business Partners to deliver the airport that Yorkshire needs and deserves.”
A spokesperson for Leeds City Council said: “The forthcoming public inquiry will consider Leeds Bradford Airport’s appeals against the council’s refusal of two CLEUD applications and the non-determination of a third. All three applications were submitted by the airport in December 2023.
“The appeals will be heard by an independent planning inspector, appointed by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
“The planning inspector will determine the appeals based on all evidence presented during the inquiry.
“Given that this is a live process, it would be inappropriate for the council to comment further.”
The Public Inquiry will be held at Leeds Civic Hall from Tuesday, March 11 to Friday, March 14.
