THE Friends of Ilkley Cemetery, part of Ilkley Civic Society, have organised a short, guided walk, led by Denise Shillitoe, to talk about some of the people connected with Ilkley’s Hydros – owners, staff and guests – who are remembered in Ilkley Cemetery.
People are invited to meet at 2pm on Sunday, August 11, at the Ashlands Road entrance to Ilkley Cemetery for the guided walks which will last approximately 90 minutes.
Ilkley has long been known as a spa town. Initially people came to “take the waters” at White Wells and then in 1840s “the water cure” became popular as well.
The first hydrotherapy establishment opened in 1844 – Ben Rhydding Hydro – soon to be followed by Wells House Hydro, Craiglands, Troutbeck and many others.
