A 10k run is being held in memory of a stalwart Ilkley Harriers member.

The event is in tribute to Pete Shields, who died in early 2020.

Profits will go to the Marie Curie charity.

Ilkley Harriers are organising the run, on Sunday, June 9.

It will be held on fully-closed roads, starting adjacent to Ilkley Rugby Club, in Denton Road, at 10.30am.

Organisers say that the flat nature of the course makes it ideal for people of all abilities – from more experienced runners seeking a personal best, to people looking to take on their first 10k.

Runners must be 15 or over.

Entry is £20, or £18 for those affiliated to a club.

A spokesperson says: "This new 10k is a tribute and memorial to our friend and fellow Harrier Pete Shields.

"Pete was a gifted runner himself and an outstanding coach, who had guided runners from far and wide. He also led training sessions for athletes at club, national and international level over many years.

"He was exceptional at getting the best out of all runners, but was especially skilful in encouraging those young enthusiastic runners who are the lifeblood of the sport.

"This fast, flat course offers a great opportunity to run a new PB – or even set a course record, with it being held for the first time – but it is also an ideal chance for those who are less experienced and wanting to tackle a 10k for the first time to give it a go.

"Profits will be donated to Marie Curie in appreciation of the help and care it gave to Pete and his family when he was very poorly."
