AN Ilkley Harrier who has lost three good friends to strokes and brain haemorrhages in the last 18 months is embarking on a fundraising campaign for Brain Research UK.

Jon Nelson, who himself has been diagnosed with a brain condition called cavernoma, will be running the London and Leeds marathons, alongside multiple half marathons across 2024 for the charity.

He is running in honour of:

Chris Peel, a local businessman and childhood friend

Janet Buckley, an old school friend who taught geography at Ilkley Grammar School for over 20 years

Patrick McCarney, a firefighter, postman, and brother-in-law

Jon said: "I myself am a local gardener, a keen member of the Ilkley Harriers, and was diagnosed with a cavernoma in 2020.

"I feel lucky to be able to give something back to help those not as fortunate as I have been, which is why I am using my passion for running in aid of Brain Research UK.

"Brain Research UK is a very important and meaningful charity that supports research into the prevention, treatment, and eventually cures of various neurological diseases. It strives towards helping the lives of those affected by neurological illness and injury so that they can live long, happy, and healthy lives.

"Neurological conditions occur in one in six of us. They can affect anyone at any time, and are often life changing or life limiting. Therefore, it is essential to support those driving medical and scientific advances so that we do not lose anymore of our loved ones in such cruel ways.

"Myself and the families of Chris, Janet, and Patrick would like to give a sincere thank you for everyone’s support during such difficult times, and for any donations big or small that will go towards a truly worthy cause.

"Anyone wishing to donate can find my JustGiving page (Jon Nelson)."

The Leeds and London marathons take place just three weeks apart.

The London Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 21 and the Leeds Marathon takes place on May 12, 2024.

Jon added: "I myself have a brain cavernoma (the size of a golf ball), but class myself as one of the lucky ones, and feel privileged to be able to raise money and awareness for such an important cause through my passion for running.

"All donations, large or small will be gratefully received."
