A Bramhope newsagent is in the running for three top community awards for his work in encouraging people to put their best feet forward for charity.

Tariq Qadeer, who runs Village News, has been nominated in three categories in the prestigious Yorkshire Choice Awards - and he needs your votes.

Tariq has been put forward in the Kate Granger Award for Outstanding Contribution, the Inspirational Individual of the Year, and Local Fundraiser of the Year categories.

A stunned Tariq said he was "excited and surprised" to receive three nominations.

He has raised money for local charities through not only running events such as the Leeds Half Marathon himself but organising fun runs and sponsored walks in the village.

Tariq, who was a finalist in the Local Fundraiser of the Year category of the Yorkshire Choice Awards last year, said: "Over the years, I have helped at least a dozen charities by raising over £130,000 for them.

"I have a very small shop in the heart of the village. And despite the size of the shop and despite working on my own for 12 hours every day, seven days a week, I have managed to organise lots of very successful charity events in the village."

He said that he started taking part in the Leeds half marathons from 2007 without any experience of long distance running or proper footwear.

Tariq said: "It was an eye opener as I was good at short, sharp runs but never thought that half marathon could be so hard. I managed to complete the run in 2.25 hours but damaged my both big toes because of the new trainers.

"I bought my shop in Bramhope in January 2008 and took part in the Leeds half again. Then I started doing a second hand books sale outside the shop to raise money. I started asking customers who came in the shop to join me in the next Leeds half marathon in 2009 and started organising groups of volunteers in the village under the banner of 'Team Bramhope'.

"In the following year, I started Sports Relief 'run a mile' event in the village. In 2012, I organised two walks in the village for BBC Children in Need Appeal with someone in a Pudsey Bear costume which I borrowed from the BBC office in Leeds."

Added to that, Tariq has organised pub quizzes, Three Peaks Walks, a Bramhope 10K race and much more, benefitting a host of charities including the Candlelighters Trust, Imran Khan Cancer appeal, Dementia UK, Gaza disaster appeal, to name just a few.
