THE 16th Airedale Reed cub scouts took part in a sponsored silence before Christmas to raise some money for the charity Sightsavers.

The cub pack, who meet at Yeadon Methodist Chapel, has a long tradition of taking part in a 'Christmas good turn' and the cubs on this occasion raised £600 for Sightsavers. The charity operates in some of the poorest countries in Africa trying to eradicate the condition called trachoma which causes blindness in very young children, and performs several hundreds of operations on adults with severe cataracts every year.

David Greenwood, Reed pack leader said: "This money will change the lives of so many children and adults, and will also help to train more health support workers within local communities. I am so proud of these cub scouts for achieving this amount of money and for the care they have shown for other people less fortunate than themselves."
