PLANTING a tree is best done in winter and so, although the Coronation of King Charles III now seems a long time ago, it was only shortly before Christmas that the Otley Coronation tree was planted.

Provided by Leeds Parks and Countryside service and with the planting facilitated by them, a native willow tree was sponsored by Otley Town Council and located in Manor Garth Park, not far from the Platinum Jubilee oak.

The planting ceremony was led by Otley Town Mayor Ray Smith and attended by Council staff, including the Otley Town Council Executive Officer, Jason Knowles, Councillors and by representatives of the community.

The plaque alongside the tree reads simply: "This tree was planted to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on 6 May 2023."

The Mayor of Otley Councillor Ray Smith said: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable duty to make the comments at the tree planting. Otley is proud of its heritage, but it is also right that we look to the future. Planting a tree for the coronation that will be enjoyed by future generations is an ideal way to reflect that.”

Councillor Richard Hughes, Chair of the Council, added: “Otley Town Council is committed to improving the environment; tree planting, even of one tree, is significant. But maintaining civic pride and traditions is also important. It was good to be able to combine the two.”

Councillor Ryk Downes, Leeds Ward Councillor, said: “Otley is fortunate to have a Town Council; the role of the Town Council complements Leeds City Council in so many ways. I applaud this working together to add to the townscape.”
