RAWDON Community Library lecture series continues on Tuesday, January 9 when Joyce Hill, Emeritus Professor, University of Leeds, gives a talk entitled Medieval Leeds.

Joyce says: "We usually think of Leeds as a proud Victorian city which came to prominence as a result of the Industrial Revolution. But it is included in Doomsday Book, when it already had a well-established past centred upon Kirkgate.

"Within a few generations a ‘new Leeds’ was established, centred upon Briggate. Together, these gave us the plan of central Leeds that still exists today.

"How did the town develop, and what do the street names tell us about the city’s medieval past? These questions and others will be explored in this illustrated lecture, which will hopefully make us look at the city centre in a new way."

The talk is at Rawdon Community Library, Micklefield Park, New Road Side, Rawdon, LS19 6DD at 2pm. Tickets are £5 (£3 students) which includes refreshments and are available in advance from the library or on the door. The library has an accessible entrance and toilet.
