We are very lucky in the Ilkley area.
Due to sphagnum moss we have relatively clean water from the moor, coming down the becks into our towns. Brackish water is cleansed by its sphagnum moss (see Countryfile regarding sphagnum moss). The moss also keeps the peat moist and together they are important carbon absorbers.
The fact that they are on raised ground in open areas makes them particularly effective. The fountain design draws attention to this elusive but vitally important plant.
With the well publicised campaign for clean rivers, the fountain proposal, with its environmental message, as well as the highly active Addingham Environment Group, means that the Ilkley area will become known for its involvement with environmental issues.
