STUDENTS at Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley joined more than 30,000 young people across Yorkshire, as part of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Restart a Heart Day.

Restart a Heart Day raises awareness about cardiac arrest and helps people to learn CPR, giving them lifesaving skills and the confidence to use them.

“We are always looking for ways to educate our young people in their responsibilities as part of the wider community. It’s great to think that, with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and their volunteers, we have trained more than 2000 young people in our school alone,” said Lee Wilson, Assistant Headteacher – Learning Support.

The students were supported by volunteers from the local Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance.

The Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Suzanne Watson, also attended the event. She said: “What a pleasure it was to see your Year 9 pupils involved with today’s Restart a Heart activities at the school. There was fantastic engagement from all of the pupils I spoke with who all commented on how much they were learning from the team of fantastic volunteers."

YAS organises the event in partnership with the British Heart Foundation, British Red Cross, the Resuscitation Council (UK) and St John Ambulance. Prince Henry’s has taken part every year, training the whole of Year 9, alongside other regular programmes in school, such as Sixth Form First Aid training.
