ON Sunday, July 30 Burley Trojans football club will be hosting two charity games at the recreation ground in York Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale.

The first game will be the ladies playing against an England Lioness supporters team starting at noon.

Ladies manager Tony Gill said: "The aim of this game is to raise awareness of peritoneal cancer, a rare form of cancer in females that at present has no known cure.

"I started work at Bradford College in 2002 and spent 10 years there and it was here that I met and became close friends with Tina Dawson. Some six weeks ago I received a message from Tina saying she had peritoneal cancer, something I had not heard of.

"When she asked if I could help her raise awareness it was a very easy yes to Tina."

Tina's son Andy said: "In light of my mum Tina Dawson recently being diagnosed with stage 3C primary peritoneal cancer (PPC), her great friend Tony Gill is organising this fantastic event to help to raise awareness for this little known type of cancer, in addition to mental health awareness.

"Peritoneal cancer can be quite similar to ovarian or colorectal cancer in nature, but is in itself different, and is located in the peritoneum. It is most often a secondary cancer, but can also be the primary location as with my mum. PPC is quite under-researched as it is so rare.

"If you have a suspicion or symptoms related to difficulties around the pelvis area and below, then don't hesitate to get checked. My mum's was found during a PET scan related to a different issue. Most importantly, the earlier it is found, the earlier it can be treated. Almost everyone knows someone who has suffered through cancer, so the more awareness for each type of the disease, the better.

"The ladies are hoping to raise awareness of this type of cancer and to ensure more people are aware."

The second game at 2pm is a men’s game against its Worth Talking - a team raising awareness of mental health.

There will be a tombola and raffle on the day to raise funds for both charities and to help with a new club house development. Refreshments and a BBQ will be at the cricket club after the games.
