CAMPAIGNERS for a footbridge over the River Wharfe in Burley-in-Wharfedale have submitted a fresh planning application to Bradford Council.

Burley Bridge Association wants to build a permanent bridge structure above the current stepping-stones at Leather Bank to provide an all-year-round safe crossing over the river for pedestrians.

The latest proposal in a 120-year campaign for a footbridge in Burley-in-Wharfedale is for a steel bridge with the platform leading up to the bridge constructed of gabions and local stone.

Bradford Council has supported the concept of a footbridge in the past having approved three previous planning applications.

The application says there are currently no other viable river crossing opportunities in Burley-In-Wharfedale, with the nearest bridges at Ben Rhydding and Otley.

It further points out that the principal landowner has recently indicated that they would not oppose a bridge in the proposed location.

Colin Speakman, President of Burley Bridge Association said: “This planning application is a critically important moment in the 120 year long campaign to have a simple footbridge built across the River Wharfe at Burley-in-Wharfedale.

"With more extreme weather episodes, including frequent flash flooding, forecast for decades ahead, it is more vital than ever before that there is a safe crossing of the river, giving the people of Burley, but also from many other communities including Menston, Shipley and Bradford, opportunity to reach the beautiful countryside of Lower Wharfedale and Nidderdale AONB, in a sustainable, car-free way, perhaps using the popular 42 mile Heritage Way that links Bradford and Ripon.

“We need this long-delayed footbridge as matter of public safety and for equality of opportunity. We urge everyone to write and support this application, to allow future generations, including those who can no longer manage the often dangerous stepping stones, to enjoy our magnificent Wharfedale countryside for years to come.”

The modified design for the bridge was first unveiled drop-in event at St. Mary’s Parish Rooms in Burley-in-Wharfedale last November when members of the design team and Burley Bridge Association trustees were on hand to answer questions about the latest designs for the bridge and plans for its construction. More than 80 people attended.

Then in February this year Burley-in-Wharfedale Parish Council published the results of a poll it carried out to gauge the level of support for a bridge. A total of 889 votes were received with 285 in favour of the bridge and 599 against (with five 'don't know'). However, the Parish Council said it still supports the concept of a bridge.

People can comment on the application online at planning.bradford.gov.uk (reference 23/02102/FUL).

At the time of going to press the application had attracted 46 comments online, with 25 objecting and 21 in support.

A decision is expected to be made in September.
