AN Aireborough Civic Society talk takes place on Tuesday, June 27 at 7.30pm at Rawdon Community Library.
Eric Jackson, a retired magistrate and local historian will give a talk entitled The History of English Canals from 1759 to the present day.
Eric talks about how canals were built, their original purpose and how they are used today.
Clive Woods, Chair of Aireborough Civic Society said: "How many of us enjoy a leisurely stroll along one of our beautiful canals without questioning when the first one was built, its purpose and who built it. Locally at Apperley Bridge we have the famous Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Its construction began in 1773, but it took 50 years to complete.
"Join Eric as he takes us on a journey through the history of our canals."
Admission is free for ACS members, non members £4.
Join ACS on the night for £10 annual membership, which includes five talks alternating with five community meetings.
Upcoming talks include: Tuesday, September 26, The story of Guiseley Wells, when Jennifer Kirkby, well-known local environmentalist and historian, talks about her discovery of the ancient history of Guiseley Wells; Tuesday, November 28, Children's favourites from the 1950's, with Malcolm Johnson.
