BRADFORD Council has launched a consultation about the introduction of a 20mph zone that covers all of Menston.

The Traffic and Highways (North) Team want to hear residents' views regarding the proposed traffic measures in village.

The proposals comprise of a village-wide 20 mph zone with supporting traffic calming features on entrances to the zone and on main through-routes.

In addition, two Traffic Regulation Movement Orders (one-way streets) are being proposed on Derry Hill and Leathley Road, along with a priority give-way feature on Main Street.

The newly elected councillor for Wharfedale, Chris Steele, has welcomed the start of the consultation on Bradford Council’s Menston Village Traffic Measures for his ward that includes a 20mph zone for Menston and part of Burley-in-Wharfedale.

Councillor Steele said: “I’m pleased that the consultation on these plans will give everyone a say in how best to make our streets safer for schoolchildren, other pedestrians and cyclists.

"One of the main concerns that residents have identified to me is the speed of traffic and heavy goods vehicles using the roads in and around the village, and almost everyone I have spoken to on the doorstep has been in favour of a 20mph limit for the village.

"I think reducing the speed limit for motorists must be the way forward, and at 20mph the stopping distance is nearly half of that at 30mph reducing the likelihood of accidents and if you are in a collision, then survivability can be up to 10 times greater.”

In addition to the proposed 20mph zone, two Traffic Regulation Movement Orders (one-way streets) are being proposed on Derry Hill and Leathley Road, Menston, along with a priority give-way feature on Main Street outside of Menston Primary School. Copies of the plans are available online at Bradford Council’s consultations page and can be seen at the libraries in Menston and Burley-in-Wharfedale.

The consultation started on Monday, June 12 and runs until Friday, June 30, 2023.
