Whether you’re an avid adventurer or just wanting to squeeze a hike in on the weekends, it’s essential to be well-equipped for the trip.

We caught up with Clare Grimshaw, Senior Marketing Manager from UK outdoor clothing supplier Craghoppers, who knows a lot about hiking and camping and can advise on what you need for your next expedition, whilst continuing to look after our planet.

Q: What kind of products are available from Craghoppers?

A: We offer everything you would need to help you prepare for an outdoor adventure or holiday. Technical tees, fleece and midlayers, waterproof jackets, trousers, shorts, hats, gloves, and socks, as well as more casual pieces which are perfect for travel.

We also offer footwear, rucksacks, travel bags and travel accessories and camping equipment like tents, sleeping bags, chairs and blankets.

Q: What is the importance of high-quality hiking and camping gear?

A: Quality outdoor clothing is defined by its durability, and it needs to be built to last. There’s no use having a waterproof jacket if it lets the rain in or your boots give you blisters on a long trail.

We offer technical, sustainable, innovative outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment which is accessible in price and distribution.

We would recommend checking what the guarantee is on products before you buy them. Our clothing has a guarantee for life (two years for footwear and five years for luggage), featuring technologies which are designed to take the uncertainty out of whether your kit is up for the job or not.

Q: How are your clothes best designed for hiking and travelling?

A: It’s all in the detail. We use technologies such as AquaDry to protect from the rain, SolarShield for sun protection and NosiLife anti-biting-insects technology. So, whether you’re kayaking, climbing or just going for a hike, our designers have thought everything through to help you get more out of your experience and be able to explore without stress.

Our waterproof jackets have map pockets and hoods that can fit a helmet. The trousers have articulated knees, stretch fabric for ease of movement, heel tape to prevent wearing from boots and many pockets to store everything you need. Our Kiwi Pro trousers are bestsellers.

Craghoppers shirts have a sunglasses (or camera lens) wipe in the hem, a sun collar that unfolds to protect your neck in the sun, a radio frequency identification (RFID) protection pocket for your credit card or passport. Our NosiLife Adventure Shirt is a firm favourite with those travelling to warmer climates, where you’re vulnerable to mosquito and insect bites. Our Salado boots also have a built-in crawler guard to stop insects getting in when not being worn.

Q: Why should I choose Craghoppers for my hiking and camping gear?

A: As a brand we set out to offer the best outdoor and adventure clothing, which is technical and always performs yet with as little negative impact on the planet as possible. Through partners and ambassadors, we want to inspire people to discover their world and explore the outdoors responsibly.

Q: What is your sustainability ethos and how can I get sustainable gear for hiking and camping?

A: At Craghoppers, we have a strong sustainability ethos with a programme led by one of our owners, Joanne Black.

We align with organisations and associations that help us to monitor our progress and improve our processes to be as sustainable as possible. One such organisation is the UN and we are signatories of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and so in line with the Paris Agreement, we are looking to reduce our carbon emissions by 45% by 2030.

Our award-winning fleece collection (available online and instore from September 23), incorporates CO2 that would have otherwise been emitted into the atmosphere.  It’s made from 70 per cent recycled polyester and 30 per cent Bio3 carbon smart polyester, made from captured CO2 emissions.

We use Ecoshield, a plant-based PFC free Durable Water Repellency, on our jackets and some trousers. NosiBotanical is a plant-based fabric treatment using lemon eucalyptus oil which serves as an effective repellent for biting-insects. We use Bloom which is made from algae in the soles of our footwear.

We also support conservation charities such as Galapagos Conservation Trust, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and Conservation Collective, working directly with the key people on the ground, protecting our oceans, endangered species and wetland spaces across the world.
