EVERYONE who loves Otley’s famous pubs is being invited to enter a special Yorkshire Day pub photo contest - with the chance of winning a cash prize.

The competition, organised by Otley Pub Club, with the support of Otley Camera Club, is to show how much Otley’s famous pubs mean to people and to celebrate this on Yorkshire Day, August 1.

The competition is running for the rest of May and June, with a deadline of 5pm on Friday, June 30, 2023. All photos will be displayed in the Stables of the Black Horse Hotel in Otley, with the exhibition being opened on Yorkshire Day and running for six days. Three photos will be announced at the opening of the exhibition as the gold, silver and bronze award winners, which will be framed and put up both in the Stables and also offered to the pub (or pubs) featured in the photos. Gold wins £100, silver £50 and bronze £25. Judges will include the Town Mayor, the Bellman and representatives from both Otley Camera Club and Otley Pub Club.

Anyone can submit a photo, by taking one over the coming weeks or submitting one they already have. It can be from a camera or a phone. It can be a current photo or a photo at Otley’s pubs in years previously. This is not about the best photographic image, the winning photos will be judged on what the photo captures about Otley’s famous pubs and why they’re special. It either needs to be a photo that the entrant has taken themselves or a photo they have permission to use (for example, a photo taken by relative or friend). Photos can submitted by on-line entry, by email or by post (see below for details). If you decide you want to change the photo before the deadline, contact the organisers who will change your entry.

To enter, all people need to do is to submit the photo and to answer three simple questions:

1. Where and when was the photo taken?

2. Who took this photo? (If not you)

3. Why is the photo special to you?

Online entrants can upload their photo and fill in the online form here

Alternatively, photos (and answers) can be emailed to info@otleypubclub.co.uk or by post for physical photos to OPC Photos, c/o Burras Lynd, Burras Lane, Otley. LS21 3ET. Physical photos will be looked after, digitised and returned to the sender. All entries, however submitted, must include the answers to the three questions or entries won’t be considered.

Bob Brook, Project Coordinator of Otley Pub Club said: “This is a project that we’ve been thinking of running for some time, because Otley’s pubs are real community centres where people have good times that they remember for years. We want to give people the opportunity to show how much they appreciate the pubs in town as well as showing off a bit by having their photos displayed in a public exhibition.

“With the exhibition being opened on Yorkshire Day we’re also hoping it will catch the imagination of a wider audience. We want everyone to see how much the people of Otley appreciate the welcome, the companionship, the variety, and the sheer enjoyment provided by all its pubs. We hope they’ll then be inspired to come and visit both the exhibition itself and the pubs in this famous pub town!”

Stephen Tonkin, Secretary of Otley Camera Club said: “We were very pleased to be asked by Otley Pub Club to assist with this interesting project. Otley Camera Club will be helping with selection of photos and printing and hanging of them at the exhibition.

“We hope many people from Otley and visitors will take photos of Otley’s famous pubs and contributing to this unique competition and we look forward to seeing all the entries!”
