Burley-in-Wharfedale will mark the 100th anniversary of the unveiling of its War Memorial by holding a service in Grange Park on Friday, May 5th.

Exactly to the day 100 years on as the clock strikes 6.30pm a service will start that will be a replica of that in 1923 when thousands gathered in the park to witness the unveiling of the War Memorial.

The memorial, designed by Burley Woodhead architect Harry Chorley, was paid for by public subscription.

A total of £801 7s 6d was raised to erect a memorial made by the Leeds Marble Works from Portland stone with a limestone base.

It was unveiled by Mr William Emmott, of Main Street, who had lost three sons in World War One - William, Edward and Tom.

Their names are on the bronze plaques on the memorial along with those of almost 100 other young men who never returned to the village from World War One.

Further names were added to the memorial after the Second World War and the Iraq War.

The service will follow the order of that in 1923 as organiser Rachel O'Connor explains: "In the Burley History Group's Archive we have copies of the original Order of Service of 1923 and we will be following that as closely as we can.

"We will sing the same hymns - 'O, Valiant Hearts' and 'For All The Saints'; read the same lesson; read The Roll of Honour from World War One and have a 'teenager sounding The Last Post just as they did back then.

"Air Cadet James Roberts, from Burley-in-Wharfedale, will perform the task just as 17 year-old bugler George White did at the unveiling."

Rachel added: "We will also be singing the National Anthem as 'God Save The King' as they did in 1923."

Clergy representing all the churches in the village will take part as will the 1224 Wharfedale Squadron ATC band.

The band will also play a short recital when the service ends and a collection will be taken for band funds.

Attending the service will be Deputy Lt of West Yorkshire Paul Lawrence, local clergy, Burley Poppy Appeal workers, Royal British Legion representatives, local Councillors, 1224 Wharfedale Squadron Air Cadets, Scouts and Guides.

Rachel said:"Everyone is welcome to come and help us mark this occasion. I would like to hear from any families with relatives on the memorial who would like to attend. They can contact me on rachel.football@hotmail co.uk."
