Lidl GB is inviting the community to comment on draft plans for a new store on Haworth Lane in Yeadon.

The site, which includes the former DW Fitness Leisure Club, is located just outside the centre of Yeadon.

Lidl says the new supermarket would increase shopping choice for residents in Yeadon and wider north-west Leeds and once opened, would create around 40 jobs for local people, including a variety of full and part-time roles, paying what they say is one of the highest wages in the industry.

The store will feature a circa 1,400m2 sales area including an instore bakery. The new supermarket will also have customer toilets as well as a 95 bay car park at the south of the site, nearer to Haworth Lane, including accessible, parent and child as well as two rapid Electric Vehicle charging points. Additionally, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainability, solar panels would be installed on the roof.

Lidl believes the site is well located with nearby access to bus stops and to further improve access to the new store, the plans also include the provision of new footways leading to and through the proposed store car park.

Lidl adds the new store proposals, which would bring a brownfield site close to the town centre back into use, has been carefully designed in response to the site’s topography. Tree planting and boundary treatments have been incorporated within the scheme. The Lidl store would be built predominantly on the same footprint as the former DW Fitness building but would be lower in height.

A spokesperson for Lidl GB said: “We are pleased to launch this public consultation for a new Lidl for Yeadon and wider North-West Leeds. We have carefully designed these proposals to fit sympathetically with the surrounding area and if approved, the store would help to increase local shopping choice and offer Lidl’s high quality and affordable products to the community. We hope that as many people as possible are able to join us during this consultation.”

Lidl GB’s dedicated property team will review all feedback from the public consultation ahead of submitting a planning application to Leeds City Council in the following months.

The new supermarket forms part of the company's ongoing £1.3bn investment across the country in 2021 and 2022. Lidl GB is the sixth largest supermarket in the UK.
