BURLEY-in-Wharfedale and District Probus Club recently provided a new seat at the village's Sun Lane Nature Reserve to replace one which was vandalised.
A plaque on the seat reads: "Burley Probus Club: 1977 - 2021" as after 44 years of existence the club had to close in autumn last year due to a members' increasing old age, a lack of recruitment of new members and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. On winding-up, the club split equally its funds between Burley Scouts & Guides and the provision of the new seat under an environmental scheme being run by Burley Community Trust.
At an informal gathering for the seat installation the last president Bruce Speed paid tribute to the several hundred members who had supported the Lower Wharfedale community-based club over its 44 years. Afterwards a farewell lunch for members and partners was held in the Red Lion Hotel, Burley.
