PLANS for a new drive-thru coffee shop and business units near Leeds Bradford Airport have been given the green light.

The application will see the coffee shop and five units built on land off Lancaster Way, in Yeadon, with views of the runway at the airport.

The plot of land is surrounded by the existing Airport West Business Park and a pub on one side currently, with the airport land over the road.

The application is made by the owners of the business park, and the land was earmarked for use for employment by Leeds City Council.

In the plans, it states the development will provide a boost for the area.

The plans state: "The coffee shop will provide a further amenity for the locality and the Airport West Business Park, and as such, would improve the attractiveness of the Business Park for employers.

"The business space units provide flexible accommodation. As such, they will add to the stock of high quality employment generation assets within this area.

"They have been designed to be particularly attractive to SMEs in an accessible location and the airport hub."

Alongside the buildings, a 55 space car park will be laid out for workers and customers.

The plans added that the development "provides a contemporary addition to the local environment as well as improve and enhance the existing landscaping" and is "an accessible and sustainable development".

A Councillor for Yeadon attempted to get the plans referred to a panel, but the application was unsuccessful and deemed "not to meet specified criteria" for a referral.

The councillor also objected to the plans claiming it created a "destination" and that it went against council policy to focus on district centres.

In approving the plans, Leeds City Council planning officers ordered a number of conditions on the development.

These included strict 6am to 11pm operation hours on the site, apart from the drive-thru which could operate 24 hours a day, ensuring there are electric vehicle charging points and sufficient cycling parking spaces, and also details must be provided to show how airport parking on the site will be restricted.

The plans were granted full planning permission by Leeds City Council.

The area where the drive-thru coffee shop and units will be built is dominated by businesses and airport parking, along with the neighbouring Hawthorne Farm pub and restaurant.
