ILKLEY Film Society’s next presentation is the poignant and quietly compelling Mexican film The Chambermaid on Sunday January 30th (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

The film’s theme is 21st century luxury and the exploitation of the “invisible” servant class needed to maintain it. Eve is a chambermaid in one of Mexico City’s most prestigious hotels, completely committed to the flawless performance of her work in the hope of achieving her ultimate ambition – promotion to the same job but on the hotel’s penthouse floor. This “carrot” is dangled by the management to foster competition and rivalry among the staff.

She is able to spend little time with her own child, but finds herself being expected to look after the baby of a wealthy Argentinian woman. This encounter and others at an adult education class and with the hotel’s window cleaner seem to offer Eve wider opportunities in her life.

A winner of awards at film festivals from Cuba to Morocco to the Netherlands, director/writer Lila Aviles’ debut feature film has universal appeal and centres on a remarkable performance by Gabriela Cartol in the title role.

Non-members are welcome as guests but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to reserve tickets. In accordance with current regulations and Playhouse policy, face masks must be worn in all parts of the venue.
