VICTORY Garden Allotments in Rawdon welcomed the public on Saturday as part of the Heritage Open Days.
The site was donated as allotments to the people of Rawdon and for the returning soldiers after the first world war by Sir Arthur Godwin the then Mayor of Bradford in September 1919.
Secretary Phil Gomersall said: "There was a nice steady trickle of visitors throughout the afternoon who were escorted around the site learning about the history of the allotments site and the facilities available for the plot-holders whilst looking at the vast array of vegetables grown. The tours ended at the communal area where there were home made cakes and cups of tea or coffee available. There were also display boards of some of the previous generation of allotment gardeners and key changes and improvements that have been made to the site over the years.
"In addition to all this there was a stand by Rawdon-in-Bloom with a book depicting all the achievements made by this group around the village. A number of Victory Garden plot-holders also volunteer for this group on a regular basis, newcomers are always welcome."
Another open afternoon will take place on Sunday, September 19 from 1pm to 5pm.
