LEEDS North West MP Alex Sobel is hoping Team GB's success in the Olympics will inspire local people to try swimming.

Mr Sobel voiced his hope after the gold medal win for Tom Daley, Leeds born Matty Lee in the Men’s Synchronised 10m Platform, and Adam Peaty in in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke.

Mr Sobel said: “I send my congratulations, and those of the nation, to Tom Daley and Matty Lee after their sensational performance receiving gold medals and Adam Peaty on another amazing gold medal. I will be continuing to cheer on the rest of Team GB as the action continues.

"We are fortunate in Leeds North West to have a number of fantastic clubs and I hope the excitement of the Olympics will provide the motivation for many residents to be #InspiredToTry any of the fantastic sports of swimming, para swimming, diving, water polo, open water swimming, or artistic swimming.”

People can find their local clubs by using Swim England’s club finding tool at discover.swimming.org/.

Mr Sobel added: “Who knows, the next Matty Lee, Adam Peaty, Ellie Simmonds or Alice Dearing could start their future Olympic journey in our pools! But even if we don’t unearth the next Olympic superstar, the joy and health benefits that being part of a club can bring is more than worth it on its own.”

The MP also congratulated Leeds born Tom Piddock for winning gold in the cross-country mountain bike race, Leeds based Georgia Taylor Brown for winning silver in the women’s triathlon, Jonny Brownlee and Lizzie Deignan for coming so close to a medal.

Alex said: “We are really lucky to have so many fantastic athletes from Leeds and the surrounding area and wish all those currently competing in the Olympics the best of luck.”
