In 2019 Ilkley residents applied for and were awarded Bathing Status - a measure we took to improve water quality as it triggers a clean up of our river. We are currently in discussions with Yorkshire Water, Ofwat and the Environment Agency to secure a radical reduction in raw sewage discharges in Ilkley.

However we are experiencing accusations that the Bathing Status is attracting more people to the river. This is not the case. The Clean River volunteers are counting people who paddle, swim, and use the riverbank from the main bridge to Beanlands Island on heavy use days throughout the bathing season from May to September. So far this year the numbers are lower than they were in 2019 when we applied for Bathing status.

The Bathing Status is attracting investment to clean up the river just as we intended; and has triggered Bradford Council to develop a water safety strategy for the Town.

The Clean River Group supports the need for better facilities, and wants to help make the river safe and enjoyable for all that use it.

We are really pleased that as intended the Bathing Status is leading to a better environment for local people and visitors. We are holding a celebration picnic on the 29th August at East Holmes field from 12.00 - 4pm with music, street food, poetry, nature walk, kids games and more. So follow our facebook, instagram and website in the coming week. We do hope you will join us.
