STAFF and children at Moorfield School and Nursery in Ilkley are celebrating after being shortlisted in the national, Independent Schools of the Year awards.

Record numbers entered this year for the awards which aim to highlight the excellence of the pupil experience in independent schools and to recognise those schools who continue to deliver a first-class education.

The judges were impressed with innovative teaching across all subject areas at Moorfield, including the introduction of Philosophy and STEM curriculums. Judges recognised that the children are challenged to be creative problem solvers and the range of projects in the STEM curriculum enhances other areas of learning. Academic excellence was noted and the success of entrance exams for senior schools, including the 11+.

The quality of outdoor learning was also recognised with the standard of forest schools teaching receiving particular commendation, both for the range and depth of the learning experience and the knowledge and expertise of the instructor. The unique and exciting provision in Nursery and Reception (Early Years) led by highly qualified teachers and Early Years practitioners was also evidenced.

Tina Herbert, Head of Moorfield, said: “We are delighted that the judges shortlisted Moorfield, recognising that excellent pastoral care and the focus on mental well-being of the children go hand in hand with academic success; both are equally important. At Moorfield, we have always believed that happy children engage in learning so much more, it really is that simple. The high standards we maintain are underpinned by the quality of the staff we have. All our teachers, teaching assistants and subject specialist teachers are qualified to the highest level; this includes specialist subject teachers for drama, art, music, forest schools, sport, choir, languages, computing and STEM. I am delighted that the professionalism and dedication of everyone who works at Moorfield has been recognised.”
