Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This week we celebrate Ascension Day. Ascension Day marks the end of Christ’s appearances on earth and is celebrated across the Christian World and for good reason. First of all, it reminds us that the Christ who came down to earth at Christmas has now ascended to heaven. Secondly, it shows us that heaven and earth co-exist at the same time and gives us reassurance about our own heavenly home. Thirdly, as Christ tells us, we are not left alone here on earth but supported and sustained through the Holy Spirit which will come upon us on Whit Sunday. Finally, Christ may have ascended to heaven, but remains in his Church, the Eucharist and in our lives. We have every reason to celebrate Christ’s Ascension.

Elected for Craven District Council was Robert Ogden and for North Yorkshire County Council David Staveley.

Church news: An Ascensiontide service for the combined parishes of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Stainforth and Langcliffe will take place in St. Oswalds church on Sunday at 10.30am.

Ingleton

Parish council: Report of Ingleton Parish Council Meeting held by video conference on May 7.

Police Report: Sergeant Breen confirmed that on every day except one over the month there was a police officer in the area. He is trying to get resources made available in the area to look at issues around anti social behaviour caused by motorbikes. He is also pushing to get groups of police visiting en masse to the smaller villages as he appreciates this area can get neglected and he wants to make an active push to stop that happening.

Parking on Laundry Lane: A councillor felt roadside areas near the two bus stops should be made no parking. After discussion the meeting agreed with this view and the clerk was instructed to contact NYCC to raise the matter of parking bays for buses. Cllr. Brown suggested that the school be contacted to ask parents not to obstruct bus parking bays and this was agreed to also.

Discharge of Sewage: Cllr. Lis received an email from Paul Bratt about Environment Agency data on wastewater from which it was evident Ingleton Wastewater Treatment Works had made multiple discharges of sewage into the river in the previous year. He felt the Parish Council should write to the Environment Agency to ask why this has happened. Cllr. Lis will forward the relevant information to the clerk.

Parks, Play Areas and Pump Track: Cllr. Lis reported youngsters using the tip near New Village for bike riding again. The councillor felt it was necessary to try to get some contact with the young bikers again about building the smaller track next to the pump track. Cllr. Mckenzie has spoken with the young bikers and reported they are very keen to progress this project. It was agreed that a meeting could be arranged with the youngsters and the planning department to progress this project.

Highways: A meeting with D. Griffiths from Highways had been arranged for May 7 at 10am. Councillors J. Emsley and S. Brash agreed to attend to discuss the siting and choice of the VAS sign. Cllr. Emsley commented on the problem about the parking at the bottom of Croft Road and queuing up for builders’ merchants by delivery lorries. After some discussion on the possibility of double yellow lines, the Chairman suggested the police should ticket one or two HGV vehicles to discourage the practice.

Community Centre: Cllr. Lis reported on the recent reopening of the Community Centre to the public and commented on the great success the vaccine clinic was proving to be with full credit going to the many volunteers who made it happen.

Riverside Project: Cllr. Emsley reported on discussions about the site which largely centred on the surfacing to be used. A meeting with Playdale was planned to discuss the options. Fencing was also considered vital. The chairman voiced concerns re it being a damp area which would affect quality of sand, but as Cllr. Emsley stated wet pour is very successful but expensive. Cllr. Walker agreed and spoke to the members as to the advantages of the more expensive surfacing. Discussion followed on the various surfaces available, and it was agreed to wait for the result of the meeting with Playdale.

Climate Change /Environment: The chairman felt that the grass verges should continue to be out of concern for residents’ safety. The chairman also suggested that ragwort and Japanese knotweed would increase if the verges were not regularly cut. To reduce the carbon footprint the parish council should look at other areas for tree planting perhaps in the park after the possible clearing of diseased ash trees.

CDC Funding to ease lockdown: Discussion followed on possible avenues to apply for funding. It was suggested the Clerk should remind the business group of the funding available.

Resignation of Clerk: The clerk confirmed that she was giving three months’ notice of terminating her employment with the parish council. She will circulate a draft advert for the position to members.

Swimming Pool Management Committee: Cllr. McGonnigal confirmed the pool will be opening at the Spring Bank Holiday.

Next meeting: The next parish council meeting will be held on Monday, June 7 at 7pm, in person at the Ingleborough Community Centre.

Long Preston

Playgroup and Pre School: Last weeks Bag2School collection raised £68.60 for the funds. Thank you to everyone who donated. These are vital funds for the charity run pre school. The committee is working strongly to overcome deficits from hard Covid times together with increasing costs. All of which was so uplifting and the support of our community and wider was overwhelming. Companies far and wide provided sponsorship and tremendous prizes and without the same we would not have reached our recording breaking total. From all of us at Long Preston Playgroup and Preschool thank you.

Our next challenge is the bake off taking place on May 31. See our Facebook page for details.
