SOME of the fascinating stories of Dales journalist W.R ‘Bill’ Mitchell will be shared at an online event organised by Craven Museum on Thursday (May 13).

The author, journalist and Craven Herald contributor who died in 2015 aged 87, dedicated his life to interviewing and capturing the stories of people from all walks of life in the Dales. In 2009, he was named Yorkshire Dales National Park's greatest living cultural icon.

His interviewees included James Herriot, Hannah Hauxwell, Kit Calvert and Marie Hartley, as well as ordinary folk living in remote communities.

The more than 400 taped interviews were captured on tape and are now a unique archive of the different accents and dialects used more than 50 years ago.

The online event will hear from one of Bill’s friends, Sita Brand, of Settle Stories, and founder of the W.R Mitchell Archive, a Settle Stories project.

Sita will share some of her favourite audio clips from the collection, some of which have never been heard in public before, and discuss the legacy Bill left behind. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session.

In their own words - Bill Mitchell, will take place at 7pm on May 13. For tickets, visit: ticketsource.co.uk/skipton-town-hall/craven-museum-specialist-talk-in-their-own-words-the-story-of-bill-mitchell/e-jyqexr
