AN exciting new project called Green Shoots has launched at Burley-in-Wharfedale Library.

Over the next couple of years the library in Grange Road plans to create an Accessible Community Garden which will be located both inside and outside the library, and they want as many people as possible from the community to get involved.

No experience in gardening is required and anyone who would like to get involved is urged to get in touch.

During April organisers would especially like people to start off a few edible plants from seed in their own homes, which can later be transplanted to the library garden.

Abigail Skerrey, Burley Library Manager and Volunteer Coordinator said: “It doesn’t matter what plants (fruit, vegetables, edible flowers), so whatever anyone would like to try would be welcome.

“The library’s “Tumbling Tom” tomato plant will shortly be arriving in the foyer for a summer long residency.

“We also have a supply of ‘Grow from Home’ kits available, with everything needed to make a start.

“We would especially welcome people over 65, or people who have been shielding, to contact us if they would like one of these kits.

“The library volunteers would be happy to deliver a kit locally completely free of charge.

“We really need the community’s help to make this a success.

“If anyone would like to participate please either email the library on burleylibrary@gmail.com, or telephone 01943 863714 and leave a message, or leave your contact details with one of the volunteers in the foyer.

“The plan for this year is to grow edible plants of many kinds in big pots around the library. Then, in later years, the plan is to expand into raised beds and planters.

“So far, a small working group of six volunteers have tidied up the border by the car park and transplanted a variety of donated herbs and plants for pollinators.”
