PEOPLE in Otley are being encouraged to use a new recycling facility - which is one of the first of its kind in Leeds.

Leeds City Council has obtained a grant to introduce WEEE Banks (Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment) for reuse and recycling of small electrical items such as hairdryers, irons, phones, laptops, or anything with batteries, a plug or a charger. Larger items such as vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers and TVs can be taken to household waste and recycling centres. Equipment will be taken to specialist facilities so that the components can be reclaimed or reused.

The Otley WEEE Bank, on Cattle Market Street, is one of the first four in Leeds.

Otley and Yeadon councillor Cllr Sandy Lay said: “Leeds is to start introducing WEEE Banks (Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment) to allow residents to easily recycle small electric items such as hairdryers, irons, phones, laptops anything with batteries, a plug or a charger. The good news is that one of the first ones has been installed is in Otley.”

He added: “Recycling helps reduce CO2 and stops destruction of the planet. This is the first step to providing this type of service in all our local communities.”
